I seem to recall there being a shop or some individual who offered a rebuild service for the "non-rebuildable" sealed stock OEM KYB etc shocks. Can anyone point me that direction? I'm asking for someone with a '79 RM400, but figured the info would be good posted here for PE owners as well, as I believe this was discussed on the PE Yahoo Group in the past. I know this exists for BMW OEM sealed/non-rebuildable shocks as well.

Do they cut & thread the bodies for a threaded sealhead? Cut & machine them for a circlip retention method for the replacement sealhead?

threading makes it complicated. Easier just use a press in body cap like Ohlins and press in seal head like Ohlins. That way all you need to do is have 1 clip groove inside the body This place does them but they weld them back up again i believe
Basically Any that are welded shut and or have a crimped in seal head at the body, need to be cut open at some point. Theres a couple different ways to do it. From memory the 79/80 RM shocks dont have the crimped body but 78 RM and the PE's do.
For the T/X PE shocks they have to be cut below the crimp line on the body which is about 1.5 inches below the wiper. That's the only way to get them apart. My method involves cutting at this line then binning that section of the body along with the seal head. Well actually thats not fully correct. I will machine off the original welded on body cap and mod it to a press in cap to retain the appearance of the factory weld. If you are not that fussy then you can just use these
Then turn up a piece of body tube and machine it for a step/sleeve joint and weld it to body to return it to correct original length (because orininal last 1.5" or so of body has been diced). Machine off that weld. Machine in groove to replicate original crimp line for original looks. Machine in c-clip groove to take a modern 1 piece KYB 36 X 12.5 seal head (KX80) like this
Then refit the modded originally welded on body cap. The joint will be below the weld. Thats the easy part
It gets harder if you want to retain the original look and not have a visible gas fill port. I have come up with a way but its pretty involved but it will blow peoples minds how it is possible. I can do them so they are easily rebuildable but have very subtle external tell tail signs that the shocks will come apart and can be serviced. Or i can do them so it absolutely looks like they do not come apart but infact do. The second method takes longer to do and would require fresh paint.
For the 79 RM shocks the same methods can be used but obviously gassing is a bit easier as it just reqires putting a valve in the reservoir.
