I've downloaded the 1978 PE175 manual, and it specifies 95 research octane number (RON) gasoline. Great, except gas pumps in North America are numbered with the (R+M)/2 (a.k.a. AKI) octane number, which my Wikipedia reading tells me is 4-6 points lower than an equivalent RON (i.e. my bike's 95 RON requirement would translate to 89-91 octane at a North American gas pump).
My question ultimately becomes, what octane number (the number displayed on the pump) should I be running? FWIW, most of my riding would be at 4000-6000 feet elevation.

You know, I have several books about tuning etc and most don't delve deeply into what octane to use. I tend to use premium because I'm only buying 4 gallons usually, My favorite pump fuel was Amaco because they were stricter as to their labeling ...Now they are BP and I'm not sure the same quality... I would just use a name brand premium fuel and make sure the carb is jetted correctly for your altitude. My friends who compete in AHRMA events like to use Race Gas or AV Gas because it stores better unlike pump fuels and it has a higher vaporization rate and they claim easier starting... And some mixed the Race or AV fuel 50/50 with pump gas to save some money since it is more expensive. I myself try and find Ethanol free fuel first if possible because the ethanol is probably the worst part but I do use premium pump fuel typically without a problem. I wouldn't worry too much, just try and find one that works for you and then keep using it ;-)
