Picked up a trashed 1982 PE175. Started the rebuild a few weeks ago. So far I have the bike stripped down to the bare frame, stripped, sandblasted, and welded a crack I found. Rattled-canned the paint (black). Just got a swing arm bearing kit so that’s my next project to complete. Have new fenders, need to get the rest of the plastics. This won’t be a quick rebuild but I hope to be able to ride it in the spring. I’ll get pics posted shortly.

Sounds good. Its not that hard to strip these bikes down to the bare frame to paint and i think its a worth while thing to do because it often enables you find faults like cracks which are otherwise not easily seen.

Like ESR said - the light grey primer really makes any cracks stand out

- The pictures look good, good luck with the build. I have been warned to make sure there is some contact between the bare metal frame and the engine mounting as it's necessary for grounding, but i have always wondered if there weren't, in these more modern Japanese motorcycles, a wire from the magneto that also served the purpose.

Yes, that’s a legitimate concern. I did a rebuild on an ‘89 RM250 earlier this year. I had to grind some paint off under the motor mounts and the coil mounting tabs to get a good spark.

Nice bike. I always thought the 82 Z with a the 81 X motor would have been a great bike.

I was looking for an”add image” icon or something similar but I couldn’t find anything. I would much rather have the image in the post. Is that feature enabled for all users?

Yes there is a button for it. 5 buttons to the left of the smiley. If you choose the 'quick reply' button or type directly in the blank white box there wont be the tool bar with all the icons. So make sure you select the blue 'Reply' button on the RH side of the page instead as it will then display the full post editing/composing options.

Sounds great, you're going to love that PE175 once together. The Full Floater suspension & the bigger forks really make for the best PE ever produced by Suzuki. Engine has enough power for pretty much anything. It's a really fun bike. My buddy has one. I am looking for one of these myself (I have a 77 PE250B).

Theres been a few around in Ohio lately. Got a friend there who's been buying and selling a couple. Another really nice one was sold and bought last week in Michigan.

Leith, was the one you referred to in Michigan perhaps for sale for $700 including a second parts bike, north of Detroit? I was eyeing up two of that description recently, but the ad is down now.

Hope the build goes well . I have an 82 175z , wasn’t a basket case when I got it , but a few bits were botched up by someone in the past . Where was the crack in your frame ? I couldn’t work the location from the photo. Mine is surprisingly easy to ride , very gentle power delivery until the revs rise and then it takes off , great fun in the woods 👍
